  • Note also that at the high school you do not have to purchase a "meal" but have the option to purchase food items from $0.25 through $3.25.
  •  .  All food items meet National School Lunch Program and California regulations.
For K-8, we must offer 3 3/4 cups of vegetables per week.  This breaks down to 1/2 cup of dark green veggies, 3/4 cup of red or orange veggies, 1/2 cup of beans or peas, 1/2 cup of starchy, 1/2 cup of other (cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, green beans, iceberg, etc) & an additional 1 cup of any veg.  For fruit there are no classifications but it must be a minimum of 1/2 cup per day.  The calories should be between 550-650 for K-6 & 600-700 for 7-8.  I generally keep them between 600-650 to cover both schools. 

For the high school it increases to 1 cup per day.  You may have noticed that there are generally 2 veg offerings per day, each in about 1/2 cup increments.  Dark green is 1/2 cup, red or orange is 1 1/4 cup, beans & peas is 1/2 cup, starchy is 1/2 cup, other is 3/4 cup + 1 1/2 cup of any additional veg.  For fruit it is also 1 cup per day.  For the high school calories should be between 750-850. 

This year the focus is more on vegetables & fruits and less of snack type items.  Also all grains should be whole grain.  All burritos & grain related entree items are whole grain.  They were introduced last year and most students didn't notice a taste difference.  Even the pasta being used is whole grain wheat & the rice has been changed to brown rice. 

The big news recently is that the State of California has replaced the K-12 finance system.  The district benefits from having families fill out the application for free and reduced lunch.  Letters are going out this week.  We need parents to fill it out & get it back to their schools.
